Medication-Assisted Treatment Q &.A

What is medication-assisted treatment?

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based treatment approach that involves using medication as part of your recovery plan for substance use disorder (SUD).

All medication use is carefully monitored and overseen by Dr. Mann, a premier addiction medicine expert, at Pacific View Recovery.

Who might need medication-assisted treatment?

MAT is for people with SUDs, such as alcohol use disorder (AUD) and opioid use disorder (OUD). If you struggle with any of these substances, you might need MAT:

  • Alcohol
  • Hydrocodone
  • Fentanyl
  • Heroin
  • Oxycodone
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Methamphetamine

MAT is also an option for other drugs. If you could be a good candidate for this approach, Dr. Mann performs an MAT assessment and explains your different treatment options.

What is the medication-assisted treatment process like?

In many cases, MAT starts when Dr. Mann comes to you in the hospital. He provides expert support there, and then follows up with you at Pacific View Recovery and through telemedicine.

Every drug used in MAT works in a different way, and some MAT drugs can treat more than one disorder. Two of the most common drugs for MAT are:

Vivitrol®

Vivitrol treats AUD and OUD. Once-a-month injections provide a stable level of naltrexone (the active ingredient). Vivitrol stops alcohol or opioid-related euphoria, and it can help lower your cravings and lessen relapse rates.

Suboxone®

Suboxone’s active ingredient is buprenorphine. It can help stop issues like stomach pain as you detox from opioids, and additionally lowers cravings and lessens your relapse risk.

You take Suboxone daily as a film that dissolves in your mouth. There’s also a monthly injection, Sublocade®, that contains the main ingredient in Suboxone. You might transition from one to the other as treatment progresses.

Dr. Mann also helps you build a support system, develop coping skills, and take the right steps to maintain sobriety for the long term.

How effective is medication-assisted treatment overall?

While every person is unique, up to 9 in 10 people who take this path are still sober two years later.

Dr. Mann sees recovery as a lifelong journey, and he’s here to lead and support you not only today but months and years from now so you can maintain your wellness.
